Nick Aguilar was elected to a four year term on the Second District seat for the San Diego County Board of Education in 1996. He has served as President and Vice President of the Board has been a member of the Board’s Policy Committee for several years. He was re-elected to the Board for a second term in 2001 and to his third term in 2005. Mr. Aguilar has also served as President, Vice President for the California County Boards of Education (CCCBE) and as member of the CCBE Executive Committee and Chair of the CCBE Marketing and Governance Standards Task Forces. Mr. Aguilar has served as a member of the California County Boards of Education (CCBE) Board of Directors. Prior to his election to the County Board of education, Mr. Aguilar elected to the Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees, headquartered in Chula Vista, California for 2 consecutive terms, starting in 1983 and served until 1992. He also served two consecutive terms as a member of the California School Boards Association (CSBA) Delegate Assembly.
Mr. Aguilar holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California San Diego and received his Jurist Doctorate degree from the University of California at Davis School of Law. He has been a member of the California State Bar since 1975 and prior to his retirement in January 2006 his area of practice is education law. Mr. Aguilar was employed as an attorney, legal advisor, and policy analyst at the University of California, San Diego for 28 years until his retirement. He also has over 30 years of K-12 and higher education policy development and program management experience.
Mr. Aguilar is a Vietnam veteran who served as a US Paratrooper with the 173rd Airborne Brigade (Separate) 1967-68 while in Vietnam. During his combat service he was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry badge, and the Air Medal. As a veteran he successfully campaigned to establish Veterans Day as an official holiday of the University of California, and he established the Veterans Association at UC San Diego, the first university-affiliated veterans association in California and the nation. Mr. Aguilar’s community service record also includes community organizations such as the nonprofit corporations that develop, own, and manage housing for low income and disabled persons, Veterans of Foreign Wars Life Member.
Mr. Aguilar has an outstanding record of service with business organizations, serving as the founding chair of the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce International Relations Committee and as active member of the Chamber’s Education Committee. Mr. Aguilar also actively participated on the San Diego South County Economic Development Council where collaborated with members of the Education-Workforce Education Committee to conduct a survey of employer needs for skills students should posses upon graduation from high school. He also served as Chair of the Education-Workforce Subcommittee on the South County Digital Divide composed of representatives from AT&T, Cox Communications, Southwestern Community College, and the San Diego County Office of Education. He edited and co-authored the Subcommittee’s report which assessed the status of the digital divided previously identified for the South County and completed research that found that private sector technology infrastructure improvements and public education investment in technology, hardware, software, and the South County Regional Education Center which contains state of the art education technology resources for all schools in South San Diego County.
